Math

Each morning we start our day with either Mountain Math (an introduction and review of skills taught and those to be taught at a later date), Word problems from the problem solving box or a reinforcement activity for skills previously taught.

Using the Envision Curriculum  and other resources , we expect our students to master their addition and subtraction facts, Add and subtract one and two digit numbers with and without regrouping, learn their multiplication and division facts, fractions , time, count money, measure using standard and non-standard units and a  have greater understanding of number fluency. Also we encourage our student to learn and to use the language of math.

Reading

Building strong readers is our goal at Jones. We are working with our Balanced Literacy and Guided Reading Programs. Through them we are getting the students to understand fiction and non fiction texts like Dinosaurs Before Dark and From Seed to Plant. This year we are learning to:
• Read with understanding and fluency
• Figure out unknown words in context
• Communicate in writing
• Retell stories with accuracy
• Correct ourselves while reading
• Identify and spell many words
• Recognize parts of a story
• Read for more than pleasure
• Use a larger sight vocabulary and much more…

Social Studies

At Jones we love hands on activities. We do many projects. One of our project is “Foods Around the World” with this project kids learn how to locate different countries on a globe. They learn about different cultures and foods. The class presents an International Festival; they bring foods from different countries. The students present their work to other classroom in English and in Spanish. They are learning that our differences make us unique.

Spanish

We are using a great program to learn Spanish, “Rosetta Stone”, this program is personalized and the students are speaking, listening and writing in Spanish.

Science

Our Science curriculum includes classroom and field investigations to help our students develop the skills of asking questions, doing research, making measurements, analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and communicating results.
